Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, D.C.
APBnews.com timed its late-1998 launch to coincide with the joint annual conventions of both the American Society of Criminologists (ASC) and Criminal Justice Journalists (CJJ) in Washington, D.C. Lead by Hoag Levins, a team of five reporters provided coverage throughout the week. Published to the Web site the same day, that news allowed a broad audience of crime-and-justice professionals and buffs to keep up with happenings at a major national event they were unable to attend.

At the core of the hotel is an atrium with its own mini forest and fall foliage (left). As part of its launch, APBnews.com turned the hotel's disco restaurant into a cyber cafe where anyone could access the Internet (right). |

At the center of the ASC conference is a trade show that brings together more than 30 publishers of criminal justice books and dozens of other vendors of crime statistics and related services for criminologists. |
