250th Anniversary Celebration
at The Indian King Tavern Museum

Along with performances by historic re-enactors, the Indian King's twelve-month-long, Year 2000 anniversary celebration featured appearances by docents who explain the traditions and crafts of colonial life.

HADDONFIELD, N.J. (Dec. 9, 2000) -- The year-long 250th anniversary of the Indian King Tavern officially ended today with the Music of Christmas program that was its final event.

The year's historic festivities included:

March 19, 2000

"Dr. Franklin, I Presume"
Performance and Open House

Benjamin Franklin visited the Indian King Tavern to talk about his relationship with his son, William Franklin, the Royal Governor of New Jersey and other aspects of life in 1777. See the illustrated report.

May 21, 2000

More Than a Signer: Francis Hopkinson
Performance and Open House

Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson visited the Indian King to discuss his role in the design of New Jersey's Great Seal as well as to perform his musical works. See the illustrated report.

July 4, 2000

9th Annual "Colony-to-State" Open House

Crowds visited the Indian King Tavern Museum after the 4th of July parade for an open house celebrating the creation of the state of New Jersey and the 250th anniversary of the tavern house.

September 17, 2000

A Visit by George Washington
Performance and Open House

The leader of the Continental Army held court in the second-floor Assembly Room of the Indian King Tavern to talk about his life in Colonial Virginia, his travels in New Jersey during War for Independence and the controversial issue of the slaves he kept at Mt. Vernon. See the illustrated report.

November 3, 4 and 5, 2000

Doll Days 2000

With its own extensive collection of historic dolls, the Indian King Tavern was a major display site during this annual town-wide festival.

The Music of Christmas
